SGA Finance Board: Let’s Talk Money and Then Some
Last night at SGA’s Finance Board meeting, many discussions and issues arose and were given much attention.
First, the board was briefed on the new referendums of the SGA Constitution [See “Changes in the SGA Constitution” for more details], which now also requires passage through the Finance Board as well as the Senate. Afterwards, the proposals of the various student organizations came forward, and a couple of points were made by the Finance Board. Those points were:
- The Finance Board does not fund fundraisers hosted by student organizations.
Meaning that, the Finance Board cannot supply funds to an organization for items to be directly sold to others for the benefit of an organization. An example: If an organization is having a bake sale, the Finance Board cannot supply funds for baked goods to be immediately sold to the public for profit. Otherwise, it would be the same as directly giving the money to the organization for keeps.
- The Finance Board cannot reimburse organizations or students once the requested funding has already been paid for.
When a request has already been paid for or funded, the Finance Board cannot reimburse the organization or student for the payment. This is a very strict policy that the Finance Board abides by to avoid any unnecessary complications.
The Finance Board will also be working on consistent policy for the allowance of requested funds for food. It is a very sticky subject due to the various intentions and actual needs (or lack there of) for food to be present at certain events. The grant of funds for food has been somewhat inconsistent in the past, therefore to make everything fair and standard to all organizations, the Finance Board is looking to investigate the topic and a make concrete ruling.
