Restructuring of the Supreme Court

The first main issue at last night’s Senate meeting was the restructuring of the Supreme Court.  Chief Justice William Joyner came to discuss the background behind the Supreme Court and the reasons, principles, challenges, and benefits of restructuring.

Basically the Supreme Court has been an inactive court. There have been no hearings in at least 5 years and regular meetings. Many students do not even realize that SGA has a judicial process.

Therefore, there has been a need to improve SGA’s judicial process by disbanding the Supreme Court, establishing the SGA Judicial Review Board, and possibly integrate the Judicial authority with Executive and Legislative roles.

The Senators seemed to agree that something should be done about SGA’s judicial process but questioned the suggested methods for restructuring. For example, Sen. Matt McNey mentioned that the Supreme Court should remain in order to be a symbolic check on the other branches. There is still more room for discussion and planning on the matter.

Moving on, or shall I say forward, to the topic of the 10 year Master Plan updates for UMBC. During last night’s presentation given by Speaker Sunaina Khandelwal, the senators oohed and awed at the upcoming projects for UMBC, such as new parking facilities, buildings, walkways, and residential additions.
